Making Progress

While in the hospital, it was recommended that I should walk 3x a day.  Once I got home this became more difficult as it’s mid-summer and 90+ degrees outside!  Not to mention I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment complex.  I did my best to get my walking in, but on Day 17 I made it back to gym!  I only did the Stationary Bike as I’m not allowed to engage or jostle my abs, or lift over 10lbs yet, but getting out of the house and doing something physical felt amazing.

First time at the YMCA post-surgery (My husband was insistent that this was a photo-worthy moment!)

My husband and I did brave the heat today (3-week mark) and walked 2 miles around the Whitewater Center.  The heat was exhausting, but no more so then for someone who is just a little out of shape and not used to it.

My post-op appointment is on Thursday, and I expect to be cleared to return to work on Monday (Day 27 – just short of 4 weeks).  In the meantime, I’ve been doing everything possible to promote my recovery.  This has meant finding the balance between being active and resting, taking iron supplements and a multi-vitamin, staying hydrated, and attempting to get 8+ hours a sleep.  Simple things, but they make a huge difference.

  1. Hi Angela,

I love your blog – I too had UC and just had surgery April 9th, now with a permanent ileostomy. My recovery has been good overall, with the occasional setbacks, but the mental part of it can sometimes be the hardest. My wife has been fantastic and I could not have made it without her! Reading blogs like yours has been very helpful – so Thank You for sharing! Glad to see things are going well and I wish you the best.

    1. Hi Rick –

Thank you so much for the comment. Glad you have a good support system (it makes such a difference!), and that overall things are going well for you. I wish you the best as well!

  2. Hi Angela,

I’m glad I found your blog. I go in for my total colectomy (UC as well – diagnosed 15 years ago) on August 14th. I hope my recovery is as successful as yours. You’re giving me lots of hope!

    Thank you,
